TICKETS (only $5) must be purchased in advance!
Available during school store hours 10/15 - 19, plus 10/23 & 10/25
No tickets will be sold at the door.

Details:  $5 ticket will include 2 slices pizza, 2 Turner beverages, 1 ice cream. The event features DJ/music, games (pingpong, corn hole, giant jenga), and a photobooth.  Can't beat the price for 2 hours of fun with friends!!!  Dress code is fall casual – school appropriate costumes welcome!

On Monday, November 5th, the PTO is hosting a Staff Appreciation Lunch! We are kindly requesting monetary donations to help with the luncheon and raffle gifts!

Turkey Trot Fun Run/Walk
Student Council Fundraiser
It was a gorgeous day Friday for the Turkey Trot!  Thank you so much to parents for helping with the cookie social!
The Annual Turkey Trot, a student council-led community service project that raises money for holiday food for families in need here at DMS, was held on Friday, October 19th. The students solicited sponsors to participate in a fun run/walk on the DMS track.

Turkey Trot Fun Run/Walk Event
Friday, Oct. 19th from 2:20 pm - 3:05 pm
The Annual Turkey Trot is a student council-led community service project that raises money for holiday food for families in need here at DMS. The students solicit sponsors then participate in a fun run/walk on the DMS track.

We are looking for a few PTO helping hands to assist teachers with the cookie social following the annual Turkey Trot.

District Forum Public Meeting Summary
School District Budget Creation
Kimberly Pawlishak, FCASD Business Manager, gave an insightful presentation on Tuesday morning regarding how the school district budget is created annually.  Attendees included community members and parents, as well as, School Board Representatives Terry Wirginis, Sandra Garbisch, and Edith Cook, Ph.D., as well as David P. McCommons, Ed.D., Deputy Superintendent.  More detailed presentations about district spending were made by Timothy Mahoney, Director of Special Education and Pupil Services regarding the cost of student support services and Daniel Breitkreutz, Director of Ancillary Services regarding transportation costs, maintenance and custodial services, as well as infrastructure investments.

It was explained that the budget is created in multiple steps, beginning with a needs assessment at each building, with additional review at the district level.  Next the administration presents a proposed budget to a budgetary committee comprised of administrators, a few school board members and community members that were unnamed for financial advising.  Next the budget and annual financial planning strategies, including details about district investments of fund balances and debt repayment strategies, are presented to the School Board for a vote.  It was clarified that the School Board operates as a committee of the whole and that there isn't an official budget review committee within the School Board.

Thank you to everyone who came to the first DMS PTO meeting - it was standing room only!!! I know 9:00 AM isn't convenient for everyone, so please keep in mind that the next meeting will be 10/17 at 7:00 PM at Ketchup City Creative in Sharpsburg.  We hope to have at least as many attendees again!  In the meantime, we will endeavor to keep parents informed through this newsletter and our DorseyvillePTO facebook page.

Each year, the DMS PTO publishes a student directory for the benefit of families to contact one another for birthday party invitations, to form study groups, arrange athletic carpools, etc.

To confirm your student listing, or to opt out of the DMS PTO Student Directory, please either complete the online form, or return a paper copy of the directory form (even if you have checked a box indicating your preference on the district emergency contact card).

The FCASD has responded to concerned parents interested in exploring ways for Fox Chapel Schools to meet new recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics that middle and high schools start at 8:30 AM or later by offering a parent survey.  There may be many strategies to explore the possible adoption of the AAP recommendations.  What are your ideas?

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that teenagers aged 13 to 18 years should regularly sleep 8 to 10 hours per day for good health. Adolescents who do not get enough sleep are more likely to:
  • Be overweight.
  • Not engage in daily physical activity.
  • Suffer from symptoms of depression.
  • Engage in unhealthy risk behaviors such as drinking, smoking tobacco, and using illicit drugs.
  • Perform poorly in school.
During puberty, adolescents become sleepy later at night and need to sleep later in the morning as a result in shifts in biological rhythms.1 These biological changes are often combined with poor sleep habits (including irregular bedtimes and the presence of electronics in the bedroom).2 During the school week, school start times are the main reason students wake up when they do.3 The combination of late bedtimes and early school start times results in most adolescents not getting enough sleep. -CDC

Athletic Events are already popping up on our calendars!  If this is your first year with a seventh or eighth grader playing sports, PTO parents have a tip for you!  If you need to pick up your student from an event, or you are arranging a carpool for athletic events, download the Travel Release Form and submit to athletic coach.
